Cape Town – TEARS Animal Rescue called for compassion, education and training of pet owners in low income communities to reduce violence against animals.

TEARS fundraising manager Lara Van Rensburg said she received funding to launch a pilot community education and animal care training program in Vrygrond in September.

It will combine curriculum-based and field-based learning in the form of weekly Capricorn Elementary School dog education and training workshops for children, to help them become ‘ambassadors’ for the animals. and consider careers in the animal welfare sector, which would provide an alternative to gangs, drugs and violence.

“The program will include free sterilization and vaccination of dogs and cats in the region to proactively prevent the spread of infectious animal diseases and reduce illegal breeding,” said Van Rensburg.
