Miami-Dade Animal Services is waiving adoption fees tomorrow for its annual “Clear the Shelters” promotion to find homes for dogs and cats at the county shelter.

Why is this important: The shelter population is again approaching capacity after being overcrowded earlier this summer, according to Animal Services.

  • As of Thursday, there were 513 cats and dogs at the shelter, spokeswoman Flora Beal told Axios. Around the 550 mark, she said, authorities will consider essential intake policies, only accepting injured or mistreated animals.

What is happening: The shelter at 3599 NW 79 Avenue in Doral is hosting an adoption party Saturday with food trucks, music, games and giveaways.

  • Adoption fees – usually $65 – will be waived for animals 4 months and older. (This includes vaccines, microchips, deworming, and sterilization surgery.)
  • You will only be responsible for the tag fee, which is $30 per year.

What they say : Bronwyn Stanford, director of animal services at the shelter, said she hopes participants find a “perfect companion for life and give a shelter animal a second chance at living their best life.”

  • “It’s the perfect time for adopters to welcome a new four-legged family member and help local shelters deal with overcrowding.”
