Lubbock Animal Services at 97% Savings Rate, a Remarkable Improvement from 30% in 2018 | KLBK | KAMC

LUBBOCK, Texas – Major changes over the past three years have seen Lubbock Animal Services achieve a savings rate of nearly 99% so far in 2021, compared to the savings rate of 30% in 2018.

Steven Greene took over as director in 2018. His principle was to “no longer euthanize,” LAS deputy director Megan Schroll said on Tuesday.

The LAS has said it now only euthanizes “severely aggressive” or critically ill animals, including animals seriously injured after being struck by cars or injured by gunshot wounds.

Before 2018, the shelter had euthanized the animals when it was in overcapacity. The care capacity from this year is 150 animals, which means that each animal receives a separate enclosure.

Two weeks ago, LAS reached its highest capacity of 2021, totaling nearly 350 animals. Through a 4th annual Clear the Shelters event, LAS has found homes for 50 animals, Schroll said. As of Wednesday, the refuge was still overcapacity with 285 animals.

In order to reduce euthanasia rates, LAS has found new ways to save animals. Schroll said LAS needed more people interested in adopting, so he partnered with seven organizations across the country, especially in states without large roaming populations. The partners are located at:

  • Lakewood, Colorado
  • Nashua, New Hampshire
  • Laconia, New Hampshire
  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Conway, New Hampshire
  • Logan, Utah

“They actually go to better homes when they go on transport,” Schroll said, adding that the shelter partners take 20 dogs per transport.

KLBK News has agreed to sponsor another Save a Pet Adopt-A-Thon this Friday and Saturday October 1-2 at Lubbock Animal Services. From 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, the adoption fee will be waived and pets can be given microchips for $ 5. LAS is located at 3323 SE Loop 289.
