Amid shelter crisis, Miami-Dade Animal Services waives some adoption fees

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida. – With Miami-Dade Animal Shelters overcapacitythe county’s Department of Animal Services is rejecting some animals and waiving adoption fees for animals four months and older over the weekend.

Agency spokeswoman Flora Beal said the shelter has reached critical levels of overcrowding, forcing them to refuse some animals from the shelter.

“We basically have to set aside what little space we have for critical cases of injured animals that are out there or those that are taken due to confiscations,” Beal said.

In a press release, the agency said it is partnering with PetSmart Charities to support National Adoption Week and continues through Sunday. Select county PetSmart stores will participate.

Adoption fees for kittens under four months old are $30 and puppies under four months old are $85; adopters remain responsible for the $30 dog license fee. All adoptions include initial vaccinations, microchipping, deworming and spaying or spaying surgery.
